The painting above was done last Spring by Norris second grade student! We had a special visit with Mrs. Hazen who vacationed in Giverny, France where Monet lived. She showed us gorgeous pictures of Monet’s house and gardens where he painted many of his masterpieces. Peace Begins With Me!
…is this year’s theme for the annual International Peace Poster Contest sponsored by the Southampton Lions Club. The students’ task was to visually communicate the theme using the elements of art: line, shape, form, color, texture. value and space. No words are allowed! The criteria for judging was original design, neatness and “readability”. We talked about how a poster should deliver it’s message at a glance. The students worked very hard on their posters and wrote artist statements answering the following questions: What does peace mean to me? Why should kids be thinking about peace? How did you use art elements to communicate the theme Peace Begins With Me?

Endangered Animals
Earlier in the 07-08 school year Mrs. Mari and I got together to plan a library/art integrated project for grade 5. During their library class, students selected an animal listed on the endangered species list and researched information on the computer. They compiled their research, imported an image and printed a fact sheet. At the same time, during their art class, students learned how to sketch and animal from a photograph, enlarge it, and then add color with oil pastels to create a poster of their endangered animal. Check out the posters by clicking on the link in the Blogroll!
